How it came about

How it came about - the story

A short story about a “miraculous multiplication of bread”.

It all began – as all good stories begin – during a prayer. On 6 October 2019, our dear friend and brother Thomas Francesco put EIGHT grains of spelt in our hands during a Sunday devotion. In his sermon he talked about the parable of the sower from Matthew 13.

There it says in verse 23: “On good soil is the seed sown with him who hears the word and also understands it; it then bears fruit a hundredfold, sixtyfold or thirtyfold”.

Francesco told us that if we plant a single spelt grain today, we would have 40-60 spelt grains after one year if the harvest is good, and in exceptional cases and under favourable conditions even more. If we assume the best case and ideal conditions, we could perhaps harvest 100 times as described in the Bible. If we then cultivated these 100 grains again, we would already have 10.000 grains the following year. After the 3rd year in a row, we would then already have 1 million grains. In order to be able to cultivate the grains again, we would then need an area of about 3,3 hectares of arable land.

If we proceeded in this way year after year, we would be able to plant more than twice Austria’s cultivated area with spelt grains after the 8th year of cultivation in a row. Namely exactly 1,33 million ha.

Become an active part of this "grain miracle" and help us to provide hungry people with bread.

Francesco invited everyone present to plant the grains he had given us in our garden to see how much fruit they would bear the following year. And that is exactly what we did. And we are still doing it today…
